The History Of Mt Calvary

The vision for a Mt. Calvary Holy Church in Philadelphia was given to Mother Little and Sister Beaulah Burton. Both women belonged to Mt. Calvary in their birth state of North Carolina. Upon relocating to Philadelphia, they started having prayer meetings as seed for a church in their apartment. The late Senior Bishop Broomfield Johnson learned of their desire and asked Dr. Ruth Greene to consider pioneering a church in Philadelphia. She answered the call of God and for seventeen years, she drove from Huntingdon Long Island, NY to Philadelphia, PA – a six-hour roundtrip drive. Due to Reverend Greene’s understandably inability to pastor during the week, the membership of Mt. Calvary experienced spurts of growth and decline. Despite the challenges, the current church building at 5944 Catharine Street was brought and Paid in Full under Dr. Greene’s tenure.  She saw into the future and often prophesied that Mt. Calvary in Philadelphia would be a “great church.”Dr. Greene became ill and could no longer pastor. Subsequently, Reverend William Grady served as Pastor for an interim. The membership sought God and He sent Reverend James Scheckleford to pastor Mt. Calvary. Under his tenure, the ministry finally experienced consistent and tremendous spiritual and natural growth. He faithfully pastured for fourteen years. In April 1997, Pastor Scheckleford felt led to resign as Pastor. He asked Reverend Sharon Campbell to consider pastoring. After much prayer, Reverend Sharon Campbell answered the call and in August 1997, became the Interim Pastor. A little less than one year, in May 1998, she was assigned as the Pastor of Mt. Calvary Holy Church of America.
